Cross country skiing trails
The cross country ski centre, La Marmotta Rosa in Riva Valdobbia, managed by the Amatori Sci di Fondo ( Amateur Cross Country Skiers – a charity organisation ) includes a 10km ring of medium to difficult pistes ( red pistes ), a 5km ring of easy pistes ( green pistes) and some difficult variants ( black pistes ) and a ski school.
In the event of insufficient snowfalls, artificial snow is added up to a height of 1500m. The pistes wind along between the Communes of Riva Valdobbia and Alagna Valsesia and alongside the river Sesia, beneath the spectacular south wall of Monte Rosa.
The Sports Centre "Gianni Severina" is found above the pistes. It has a bar, restaurant, rental service, showers, bathrooms and changing rooms. It is possible to rent equipment if necessary and also to book lessons with a ski instructor at the school. Along some parts of the pistes, there is a walkway for pedestrians and people with snowshoes
Panoramic highlights
- In the hamlet Balma: the best view of Rosa and the Vogna Valley
- In Alzarella: the ideal place to observe surface frost and ice crystals that reach lengths of up to 6cm
- In Caseruolo: the perfect observation point for deer and roe deer grazing along the pistes in the early morning hours
- The most sunny spot is the meadows in Balma.
