The Polluce, located between the Black Rock and the Castore, stands alone on the Verra glacier. It appears from every side like an ice cone crossed by some rocky ridge. The ascent by the normal route is very complete: it requires knowledge of the techniques on the glacier with ice axe and crampons and of the basic techniques of rock climbing. The rocky terminal spire is equipped with fixed ropes, which facilitate the ascent. The snow-capped peak is a perfect panoramic balcony on the Matterhorn and on the entire Monte Rosa chain.

Program

First day

Meeting in St Jacques in the morning, transport to Pian di Verra Superiore, ascent to the Guide di Ayas Refuge 3420 m, dinner and overnight stay.

Second day

Departure at the first light of dawn; from the refuge you first reach the valley of the Verra glacier and continue eastwards, aiming for the base of the southern slope of Castore. You face the first easy rocks, often covered with snow, which lead to a prominence where a fixed rope allows you to overcome some smooth slabs. You go along an often frozen chimney, equipped with a fixed rope, to reach an altitude of 3991 m where the snowy ridge that leads to the top of the Pollux begins. Return to St Jacques in the afternoon.

Mountaineering is an inherently dangerous activity that can lead to serious injury or death. The guides of Monte Rosa are all UIAGM certified and are committed to doing everything possible to minimize the dangers, but the risk can never be eliminated and must be accepted before joining one of our groups. The guides of Monte Rosa will always do their best to help you achieve your goals and ensure you have a very pleasant experience; however, you must accept to rely on their unquestionable judgment while you are in the mountains and to respect and accept any decision they make. Being properly prepared and having a minimum standard of physical fitness is necessary to maintain an adequate safety margin in mountaineering climbs. If, due to your physical condition or for any other reason, your guide decides that you are not ready to attempt the ascent to Monte Rosa, you will be offered suitable alternatives.
