The Alagna Carnival<\/strong> is one of the most authentic traditions of Alagna Valsesia<\/strong>.
Over time<\/strong>, its origins have been preserved through the collective memory of the community and passed down orally from generation to generation.
Although<\/strong> no written sources precisely document its beginnings, this popular dimension makes the Carnival a living expression of local cultural heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Masks of the Alagna Carnival<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Among the most recognizable symbols<\/strong>, the Carnival features Schwi and Schwilja<\/strong>, the pig and the sow.
Created in the 1990s, these masks quickly became iconic figures of the celebration.
Thanks to<\/strong> their first performers, Ivana Valzer and Gianpaolo Orso, the characters gained identity and meaning.
As a result<\/strong>, they now embody the ironic and communal spirit of the Alagna Carnival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The earliest documented accounts date back to 1959<\/strong>, when a group of residents of Alagna decided to prepare it for the first time on Shrove Tuesday<\/strong>, inspired by the traditions of neighboring villages in Valsesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the distribution of Paniccia, it was customary to hold the piglet race<\/strong> along the village\u2019s main street\u2014a festive moment involving children, musicians, and residents, with the piglet adorned with a colorful wreath around its neck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Traditional Games and Shrove Tuesday Rituals<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On the morning of Shrove Tuesday, the main square came alive with traditional folk games<\/strong>, including the greasy pole<\/strong>, a symbol of skill and collective fun. As evening fell, small bonfires known as \u201cfaschnachtfirljini\u201d<\/strong> were lit in every hamlet, accompanied by the ritual shouts of \u201cHuru\u201d<\/strong>, echoing from one part of the village to another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The day concluded with the masked ball<\/strong> at the Unione Alagnese, renowned for its elaborate and sometimes unsettling masks, a distinctive feature of the local Carnival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Carnival Today: A Living and Shared Tradition<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Today, the Alagna Carnival<\/strong> officially begins on Epiphany Day<\/strong>, with the first ball held at the Unione Alagnese. On this occasion, the Mayor symbolically hands over the wooden keys<\/strong> to the main masks, marking the official opening of the celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the days leading up to Shrove Tuesday, the following events take place:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • the collective cutting of vegetables<\/strong> for the preparation of Paniccia<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • the children\u2019s ball<\/strong>, a special moment dedicated to families<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • the distribution of Paniccia<\/strong>, followed by the traditional Carnival lottery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    The day ends with the Ball of the \u201cPopolo Porco\u201d<\/strong>, renewing the bond between the community and its traditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A Symbol Through Time<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    The deep connection between the Carnival and the identity of Alagna is also evident in the Theatre of Alagna Valsesia<\/strong>, inaugurated in 1900, where the emblem of the pig decorates the front of the stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A traditional legend from Valsesia tells of a symbolic rivalry between the Purcei of Alagna<\/strong>, the Garuf of Riva Valdobbia<\/strong>, and the Brusoign of Mollia<\/strong>\u2014a story passed down orally that continues to enhance the Carnival\u2019s charm. Today, besides Alagna, only Campertogno<\/strong> still preserves the tradition of Carnival masks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
