Climb to Dufour Peak

If mountaineering is in your DNA and your new goal is to reach the highest peak of Monte Rosa, our mountain guides are ready to take you to Punta Dufour at 4634 meters.

Punta Dufour, known as Dufourspitze in German and Pointe Dufour in French, is named after Guillaume-Henri Dufour, the coordinator of the first Swiss cartography project.
This alpine ascent is reserved for those with a good understanding and experience of high-altitude mountaineering. It is a challenging summit with rock and mixed routes, offering a captivating experience that provides unforgettable emotions.

Due to the difficulty of the excursion, we will require mountaineers to submit a curriculum vitae detailing their ridge experiences, high mountain climbing, proficiency with crampons, and physical fitness. Therefore, before booking the ascent to Punta Dufour, we recommend a trial climb such as Cresta del Soldato, during which our guides will assess your level of preparation.

Punta Dufour is also a recommended excursion for all mountaineers aiming to climb Mont Blanc.

Program

Daily hike

If you are highly experienced mountaineers, and your curriculum supports it, we offer a single-day ascent to Punta Dufour. Together with the guide, we will determine the meeting point and time. The departure will always depend on the weather and glacier conditions.

3 days program: Day 1

To approach this ascent in the best way possible, we will gradually acclimatize to the altitude. Meeting with the guide at 2:30 PM at Passo dei Salati, equipment check, and ascent to Indren using the lifts. From Indren, we will continue on foot to reach either the Rifugio Città di Mantova or the Capanna Gnifetti by 5:00 PM. Dinner and overnight stay

3 days program: Day 2

Departure at the first light of dawn to reach the Cresta del Soldato and then continue to Capanna Margherita. Dinner and overnight stay in the highest refuge in Europe. Please note: in case of altitude sickness issues, we recommend spending a second night at a lower altitude to ensure you are more rested before heading to the summit.

3 days program: Day 3

Departure at dawn from Capanna Margherita with an arrival at Punta Dufour (4634 m) in approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes (6 hours and 30 minutes when starting from Mantova or Gnifetti). We will follow the standard route that passes through Punta Zumstein. After reaching the summit and touching the sky with a finger, we will begin our descent for the return journey.

Mountaineering is an inherently dangerous activity that can lead to serious injury or death. The guides of Monte Rosa are all UIAGM certified and are committed to doing everything possible to minimize the dangers, but the risk can never be eliminated and must be accepted before joining one of our groups. The guides of Monte Rosa will always do their best to help you achieve your goals and ensure you have a very pleasant experience; however, you must accept to rely on their unquestionable judgment while you are in the mountains and to respect and accept any decision they make. Being properly prepared and having a minimum standard of physical fitness is necessary to maintain an adequate safety margin in mountaineering climbs. If, due to your physical condition or for any other reason, your guide decides that you are not ready to attempt the ascent to Monte Rosa, you will be offered suitable alternatives.
