Before the Walser
The first documents related to the territory of Alagna and Riva dates back to the year one thousand. The territory under Mont Rosa belonged to the monasteries of San Nazzaro of Biandrate, San Pietro in Castelletto and to the Bishop of Novara and it is in the midst of their stories that you can read about the history of Alta Valsesia.
The age of Walser
In the transformation process of medieval economy, the influence of the monasteries and the presence of feudal lords, who started transalpine commerce, favoured the settling of Walser colonies in Alta Valsesia from the second half of the XIII century. The founding of the Walser colonies can be placed around 1285 but there aren't documents to validate this date.
The separation from Pietre Gemelle
The arrival of the Walser and the colonization of the head valley of Sesia, increased the community of Pietre Gemelle’s population, culture and wealth.
The 20th century, the ski lift on Mont Rosa
The tourist development and drastic economic change experienced by Alagna and Riva at the end of the 19th century transformed the centre of Alagna.
