The "Alagna Water Refill" project brings the Municipality of Alagna Valsesia one step closer to achieving one of its most important goals. For some time now, the municipality has been working towards sustainable development of its territory through awareness-raising activities and the involvement of everyone who, in various ways, lives in or visits the area. To this end, a path has been initiated with the aim of creating a tourism offering that aligns with the principles of responsible and sustainable tourism.
The Municipality of Alagna Valsesia, in collaboration with the Department of Management at the University of Turin and the Piedmont Region, has launched an eco-sustainability project called “Alagna Walser Green Paradise.” The initiative focuses on a significant reduction in plastic waste and the consequent decrease in the sale of plastic bottles. To support this goal, “Alagna Water Refill” water refill stations have been introduced in local businesses. Raising awareness among both residents and tourists about the importance of reducing environmental impact is essential. Projects like this clearly show that it is possible to balance economic development with environmental protection, in order to safeguard and enhance the value of the local territory.
The project was met with enthusiasm from the very beginning by many local businesses, as evidenced by the widespread installation of water refill stations in bars, restaurants, and hotels. This positive response reflects the commitment and interest shown by industry operators in promoting sustainable practices and embracing the principles of the "Alagna Walser Green Paradise" project.
Alagna Water Refill will also include the creation and distribution of specially designed reusable bottles, currently in production thanks to the valuable support of Teva, Alpiq, Cotopaxi, and Vibram. At the same time, a mapping of public fountains is underway, allowing tourists and residents to access free water while exploring the area. This initiative not only helps reduce the use of single-use plastic, but also offers an opportunity to rediscover the extraordinary historic water network that, for centuries, powered mills, sawmills, washhouses, and fountains — living traces of the evolution of Alagna and Riva Valdobbia.
In an era where environmental protection is increasingly important, initiatives like this show that it is possible to pursue economic development without compromising our planet. Alagna, for its part, is trying!
With the arrival of the warm season, these bottles can be refilled for free at designated refill points and mapped fountains—offering a chance to immerse yourself in the nature and history of Alagna and Riva Valdobbia.
Thank you all!
Mark your calendars: this spring marks the beginning of a new era for water in Alagna!
